Anxiety Help - Separation Anxiety - Normal for Two-Year-Old?

Separation Anxiety - Normal for Two-Year-Old?

My husband and I both work. I went back to work when my daughter was four months old, so she's used to us both leaving in the morning and staying with the nanny.

We changed nannies about two months ago, and right about that time her reaction when we would leave in the morning became very severe - crying so hard, screaming, clinging to me as if for dear life.

One might think that the new nanny is being abusive, but it's not the case. When we come home, she's very happy, she hugs the nanny, she's had a good day and her appetite and sleeping patterns are normal.

Anti Anxiety Medication and School

My doctor told me that it wouldn't be a good idea for me to begin anti anxiety medications while I was still in College because it can mess with me more than help.

I don't agree with your doctor.

I would recommend starting them between semesters, though, because they affect everyone differently, and some of them can be not so great.

Anxiety Help - Anxiety Symptoms and Strep Throat

Anxiety Symptoms and Strep Throat

Can strep throat cause you to have anxiety symptoms?

It's impossible to say a definitive 'no' to anything in medicine. But I have never heard of this happening before and thinking about anatomy and physiology and pathology and all the other courses I have taken to prepare for my career, it doesn't make sense that it would cause anxiety symptoms.

Sounds like you started taking Celexa before you had strep throat.

Anxiety Help - Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Has anyone had burning chest pain, aching pain, teeth pain, chin pain, jaw falling asleep, sharp arm pains off and on, a lot of gas moving in chest, burning stomach in association with anxiety or is it heart related? Also some pains in leg, back of head and dizziness and headaches? And comes and goes worse during anxiety. It usually starts about a week before a weird sensation in my throat.

Sounds like you have GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder).

The teeth and jaw pain is probably caused by you grinding your teeth while you sleep.

Anxiety Help - Is this Social Anxiety Disorder?

Is this Social Anxiety Disorder?

I don't know if social anxiety disorder is the term for it. But I think from to time it does happen to many of us.

Take a break. Try to get the most of each visit so you don't have to go everyday. Plan ahead. Have a list. Schedule for less hectic times (crowds and long lines) of the day.

If it is giving you physical stress or anxiety, please see your doctor and get a referral from them for stress management counseling.

General Anxiety Disorder - Is it Normal to Fear?

I was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder last year; it was really bad, I was worrying about everything and afraid of everything.

Now we are in the middle of trying to sell our house, adopting a new baby (first time parents and we get the baby in two weeks), and buying a new house. I can feel the anxiety coming on and I get scared because I really don't want to feel the way I did before.

Is this normal to be afraid of feeling that way again?

Worried Sick: The Torment Associated With Health Anxiety

The six percent of Americans who suffer from health anxiety worry pointlessly and painfully about dangers that do not exist.

Reassurance by doctors provides no comfort for people with health anxiety. In fact a person with health anxiety is like to go from doctor to doctor, distrusting what they say, yet demanding more and more attention and diagnostic tests. Their behavior may seem ridiculous to others, even to themselves, but their distress is very real.

According to the Anxiety and Phobia Treatment Center at White Plains Medical Center, treatment is directed at changing perceptions. The person with health anxiety has to learn how to live with the ordinary ups and downs of life before they can live as comfortably as other people.

I always feel nervous; Im constantly checking the door locks, the stove, washer/dryer, microwave. Im 100% scared of the dark. Im always worried the smoke alarms are going to go off, therefore I never cook on the stove/oven anymore. I worry about the computer being on for long periods of time, in my mind I see it blowing up, catching fire.

The symptoms point to either Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

When your anxious, your sympathetic nervous system kicks into gear increasing your heart rate, breathing, sweating, etc. as well as slowing down digestion in the stomach.

Stress and Anxiety - Trigger Depression

Is it possible for stress and anxiety to trigger depression?

Yes, but I think you've been advised incorrectly. Anxiety can cause a wide range of problems. If left unchecked it can cause severe physical problems as well.

You will probably need professional help to determine the problem. First, though, sit down with a pencil and paper and list what, you think, would be causing your anxiety. Since this is an overwhelming task, break it down into parts:

Anxiety Disorder Association of America

The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) helped calm their fears when Lisa and David were told that their beautiful four year old daughter suffered from childhood anxiety.

"We were devastated at first," said Lisa. "We thought that we were bad parents or that we had done something horrible to cause this condition in our daughter. After talking to the ADAA we realized that anxiety is a disease that needs treatment just like diabetes or heart disease.

Working with a therapist, Lisa and David discovered that children and teens have anxiety in their lives, just as adults do, and they can suffer from anxiety disorders in much the same way.

Anxiety Help - Cure for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Cure for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a key component of treatment for generalized anxiety disorder. Especially effective is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which examines distortions in thinking that lead to psychological problems and can help you retrain your reactions to stress and anxiety.

Generalized anxiety disorder commonly responds to certain drugs, such as antidepressants of the family that includes Prozac and Paxil, and anti anxiety medications such as Xanax and Valium. However, medication generally is recommended only as a temporary measure to relieve symptoms at the beginning of the treatment process, with psychotherapy the key to long-term success.

See the Mayo Clinics article on treatment for GAD for a discussion of drug alternatives and psychotherapy, as well as Psych Centrals site on generalized anxiety disorder treatment.

How to Stop Anxiety Disorder?

How can you stop anxiety disorder without a psychiatrist or medicine?

Keep an "anxiety journal." Write down when and where you are anxious, what is happening, who you are with and what you are doing. This can help you identify your "triggers," that is, things that make you anxious. You can then either change what can be changed (for instance, if you find yourself becoming anxious after your morning coffee, you can cut back on caffeine), or mentally preparing yourself to deal with the anxiety provoking situations.
