Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression

Is cognitive behavioral therapy effective in treating anxiety and depression?

It depends on the person; try it for a few months and see if it is for you.

Its based on solid theory from cognitive psychology about how the mind changes its core beliefs; and of course decades of clinical practice. However, it is not for everyone.

Don't Let Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms Rule Your Life

"I eventually got to the point where I couldn't even leave the house. I couldn't face the possibility of going to the mall or grocery shopping because I was certain that everyone would be staring at me and judging me.

"The more I gave in to the symptoms, the worse they became. Finally my mother insisted that I seek professional help for my social anxiety disorder symptoms. I am so glad that I sought help because my life is so much better now."

The secondary symptoms of social anxiety vary from person to person. Some people cannot write in public because they are afraid their hand will shake. Others miss important job interviews because they cannot bear the thought of meeting someone new. Some have anxiety about eating or drinking in public.

Should I take her back to the pediatrician, or maybe to a psychiatrist? I just remember wanting to kill myself in fourth grade and I don't want my daughter to feel that way.

Help for Performance Anxiety

What can I do for performance anxiety?

I almost feel ashamed of being noticed. But after two minutes I am normal. I have tried every possible relaxation technique on the web and off. Can someone help, please?

If you are interested in medication treatment, Beta Blockers can be very effective. Taken in small doses shortly before one anticipates having to perform or do a public presentation, they can do an AWESOME job in helping to control the autonomic symptoms of performance anxiety (rapid heart rate, sweating, heavy breathing/hyperventilating, feeling flushed).

Anxiety Help - Stress and Anxiety - Trigger Depression

Stress and Anxiety - Trigger Depression

Is it possible for stress and anxiety to trigger depression?

Yes, but I think you've been advised incorrectly. Anxiety can cause a wide range of problems. If left unchecked it can cause severe physical problems as well.

You will probably need professional help to determine the problem. First, though, sit down with a pencil and paper and list what, you think, would be causing your anxiety. Since this is an overwhelming task, break it down into parts:

Child Anxiety Creates a Web of Worry and Fear

While other carefree children are skipping, laughing and playing ball on the playground, eight-year old Johnny, who suffers from child anxiety, stands on the sidelines showing little emotion and having no interaction with other children.

Back in the classroom, the young child anxiety sufferer dreads the prospect of being called upon by the teacher. You can see the fear in his eyes when the teacher asks him to tell the class about his new dog, Fluffy.

Typically, child anxiety sufferers are very self-conscious, feel tense and have a strong need for reassurance. Child anxiety sufferers may complain about stomachaches or other discomforts that do not appear to have a physical cause.

Anxiety Disorders Can Be Conquered

"I had spent most of my life thinking that I must be crazy because I worried all the time, avoided social situations and had frequent panic attacks that became progressively worse. I finally got to the point that I just could not leave my house. I was relieved when I found out that I suffered from anxiety disorders and that they were treatable."

Janice is not alone. More than 25 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. While some degree of anxiety is normal, even beneficial, people who suffer from anxiety disorders are plagued with recurring episodes of intense crippling fear and they feel powerless to manage their symptoms.

Anxiety Help - Social Anxiety Disorder or Fear of Women?

Social Anxiety Disorder or Fear of Women?

Ever since I broke up with my ex-fiancee three years ago, I have been unbelievably uncomfortable around women. Some would call this social anxiety disorder, but I can carry on a conversation fine and can be with people.

Even when I was engaged I had this problem. I could be intimate with her, but I never felt totally at ease in her arms. Additionally, I am unusually aware of a woman's physical beauty. I have a tendency to back away a few inches when a woman gets too close to me.

Are these spatial-boundary issues, as I was born three months premature and was constantly surrounded by female nurses in the premature ward?
